23rd  Annual QMAS
Livestock Auction
August 9, 2008 - 7pm @
The Door County Fair

More than just an Auction!

Youth who are interested in participating in the QMAS auction spend 11 months preparing for the sale and meeting the program requirements. Youth first must enroll in a 4-H or FFA chapter in Door County, to become eligible to participate in the program. Members must then designate the species they would like to show as a project for the year.

The next step for most exhibitors is to attend one of the mandatory group meetings in December or early January to sign up for the QMAS program and meet their first meeting requirement. This meeting presents the rules and disperses general information. The exhibitors then have to attend two additional group meetings of their choice which are spread out over the course of five months and cover an array of topics that relate to the QMAS program.

During this time youth are purchasing their young animals and participating in a mandatory beginning weigh in. Animals are usually purchased a few weeks before the weigh in, and in some cases even a few months before the weigh in. Beef weigh in for the first time is in early January, Hogs in April, and Sheep in May. Small animals are weighed at the fair only.

At the fair, exhibitors design marketing posters with their project information (start/end weights, age, etc.), decorate their stalls/pens, and care for their animal through-out the duration of the fair. They participate in live animal judging to include market and showmanship categories, all helping to prepare them for the sale on Saturday night.

After the sale, each exhibitor has to turn in a mandatory record book and thank you notes to his/her buyer by 3 pm on the Sunday of the fair or they will be disqualified from entering the sale the following year. It is reviewed and then returned to them at the banquet, which they attend on the Sunday after the Fair.

The carcass contest is scored on Wednesday following the Fair, with results and prizes awarded at the buyers banquet.

As you can see it takes months of hard work and dedication to participate in the QMAS Auction at the fair. Most of the QMAS participating youth continue in the program for several years and are already planning next year's projects before this year's fair is done!

Proceeds from the sale of the livestock go to cover the expenses of raising their project animals and often helps to fund their college education.

Plan to arrive early and walk through the barns, see the exhibitors and their projects, as well as enjoy the fair!

Become a part of tradition!

Join in the fun! (You will be amazed at what you learn in the process.)

Who are we?

The Door County Quality Market Animal Sale (QMAS) Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and furtherance of the education of 4-H & FFA youth as well as the general public through livestock projects.

Our program provides a venue for the 4-H & FFA youth of Door County, Wisconsin to be able to culminate their livestock projects and recognize their reward for the hard work and long hours during their yearlong livestock projects.

The Door County QMAS auction is held in conjunction with the Door County Fair located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin during the second weekend of August. Working with Door County personnel and facilities greatly enhances the value of the livestock projects, and increases the education and awareness of the general public, as the livestock exhibits are an integral part of the public's fair experience.

The sale is made possible through the support of the sponsors and buyers listed on this website, and through the work of the volunteers on the QMAS Committee. If you are interested in becoming a supporter or buyer, all you have to do is visit the Door County Fair on Saturday night in the Livestock Arena.

All donations and contributions are tax deductible, and your help will be greatly appreciated by the exhibitors and community alike.

Who is the QMAS Committee

The QMAS committee is a group of interested adults that plan the meetings, Livestock Auction and organize all of the details of the QMAS program. Any person who is interested in the maintaining, teaching and promoting of quality meat, is considered a committee member. Meetings are held the first Monday of every month and start already in September right after the fair!

The QMAS Committee is an independent committee, subject to by-laws and the guidelines that are set forth by the County Fair Premium list. Please contact us if you would be interested in joining the committee or would like to come to a meeting!
